Intel salaries revealed: How much the chip giant pays engineers, managers, and more as it aims to turn around slowing growth and invests $20 billion in building new US factories (INTC)

Pat Gelsinger

For years, the $234 billion chip giant Intel has experienced slowing revenue growth and shrinking margins. It’s facing rising competition from companies like Taiwan Semiconductor, AMD, and Nvidia amid a  worldwide semiconductor shortage, while marquee customers like Apple have started designing their own chips.

Enter Pat Gelsinger, a company veteran who left the top spot at VMware in February to step in as Intel’s new CEO and try to turn the company around.

In March, Intel announced that it will invest $20 billion in building new factories in Arizona — a plan analysts say is promising — and it’s investing full-force in research and development. Right now, Intel is transitioning from building CPU (Central Processing Units) to XPU, which are more efficient for graphics, media, AI, memory, security, and networking. It has also been racing against other tech giants like IBM, Microsoft, and Google to build quantum computers and has more than a 92% market share in data centers, which Amazon, Microsoft and Google rely on to build out their cloud infrastructures.

For all of this, Intel relies on researchers, managers, marketers, and multiple types of software and hardware engineers. To see what Intel pays its tech workers, Business Insider analyzed the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification’s disclosure data for permanent and temporary foreign workers collected from the first quarter of 2021.

While the data has some caveats — it only includes foreign workers, sometimes includes salary ranges instead of exact figures, and only includes base pay versus total compensation, which can include bonuses or stock — it still provides a rare glimpse into an otherwise unknown area.

Here’s a peek at the salaries that Intel pays US-based engineers, managers, and more, based on roles from nearly 1,000 approved visa applications that the company filed with authorities:
